ARGENTINA - DAIRY SECTOR

Dairy Industry

Milk industry sector is composed by a great amount of companies, from big ones to others that only process their own farm production (factory-farmer). Despite this wide variety of companies, it is possible to split industrial sector in three segments:

  • A group of 10-12 companies that receive more than 250.000 milk litres/day, spread into their production lines, most of them exporters, and they process around 50-55% of national production. Among these are: Sancor, La Serenìsima, Nestlè, Milk au t, Williner, Molfino and Parmalat.
  • A group of 90-100 companies that receive around 20.000 and 250.000 milk litres/day , with a high participation in cheese, almost with no exports, that process around 25-30% of Total poduction.
  • There are a considerable number of small factories, that receive less than 20.000 litres/day, and dedicate themselves almost exclusively to cheese, processing around 20% of national production.

As shown in the following graphic, Argentine milk industry is highly concentrated on cheese, representing almost 43% of milk national production. In decreasing importance order, milk powder follows with 22.4% and fluid milk (pasteurized and sterilized) with 21.9%.
